In the village of Acciaroli along the southern Italian coast about 3 hours south of Naples they needed a new sea wall to protect the port. So the local mafia built the sea wall. They did not do such a great job and the sea wall failed and the houses and businesses were flooded during a big storm. The mayor of the village came to the head of the construction company and said that he was going to have to sue the company and get them to pay for all the damaged homes and businesses. The mafioso told him not to do this. But the mayor did it anyway due to pressure from local merchants. The mayor was found shot in the head a few days later. The construction company then fixed the sea wall and it still stands today with a nice big Virgin Mary at the end of it. Acciaroli is a perfect example of a mafia controlled village. It is fairly clean and picturesque. You will see many expensive cars parked everywhere. It is quiet and peaceful. There are nice boats in the harbor. The average lifespan of someone who lives in the area is quite long, except for people like the mayor. It is well known as one of the centers of the Mediterranean Diet.
